Asean countries are meeting in Kuching, Malaysia this week to discuss preparations to cope with the annual cross-border haze from fires set to clear forest land for plantations.
The meeting will tackle fire prevention and implementing a grant from the Global Environmental Facility on how to handle forest fires in peat lands. "Peat lands contribute more haze In the region than other lands," said Liana Bratasida, who works with the Indonesian environment ministry-Major fires in Indonesia in 1997 and 1998 created a debilitating haze across Singapore.
